Culturally and historically Kurdistan has been part of what is known as Greater Iran (or historic Persia). In addition to Kurds who comprise the majority of the population of the region there are also communities of Arab, Armenian, Assyrian, Azeri, Jewish, Ossetian, Persian, and Turkic people traditionally scattered throughout the region.
